Verizon's group president for New York/Connecticut Paul Crotty, who spoke at the June BOMA/NY luncheon.

The most communications-intensive piece of real estate in the world now boasts the most advanced cellular/satellite system in the world, a result of decisions made shortly after assessing the damage of 9-11. Since the entire infrastructure needed to be replaced, Verizon decided to go with the most advanced system possible, with cellular service being replaced in 10 days.

Five thousand employees working around the clock brought the city back on line. Previous disaster planning disaster planning - disaster recovery  and built-in redundancy allowed for one of the first key moves, which was switching as many lines as possible to! the Bridge Street facility in Brooklyn. But getting to the damaged equipment would require, at minimum, 10 days. That was unacceptable, Crotty declared, so a solution was devised to run thousands of yards of cable above ground and over the streets in temporary housings.

Crotty credit that type of ingenuity (and an emergency plan previously developed with the NYPD NYPD New York City Police Department (since 1845; New York City, NY, USA)

Crotty also credited Con Ed for its rapid recovery of power, which together with voice and data. In addition, he thanked BOMA/NY for its help in recovery efforts.

"I must say that the men and women of BOMA/NY did a terrific, unheralded job," he said. "We hear reports about the Stock Exchange getting up and running by Friday of that terrible week, but first, the building had to be up and running. No one does that other than the building manager, and the building management professionals of this City were right behind every emergency service worker putting the City to rights.
