The 100th anniversary of George Balanchine's birth isn't until January 22, 2004, but efforts are already underway to persuade the U.S. Postal Service The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) processes and delivers mail to individuals and businesses within the United States. The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs.  to issue a commemorative stamp in his honor. The New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946.  Volunteers are urging dance fans everywhere to write the USPS (1) (Uninterruptible Switching Power Supply) A power supply for a computer that contains its own battery and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) circuitry. See power supply and UPS.  and encourage them to recognize Balanchine's significant impact not only on ballet and dance in general, but on American and international culture. Meanwhile, the George Balanchine Foundation is staging its own sort of commemoration, of some of Balanchine's lesser known works. Aided by a research team including Dance Magazine contributors Lynn Garafola, Sally Sommer Sommer is a surname, from the German and Danish word for the season "summer".

Begun by foundation research director Nancy Reynolds, the project will document and, when possible, recreate Balanchine's choreography for Broadway shows, Hollywood films and commercial productions.
