BOEING TO OFFER AWACS ON ITS MODEL 767 AIRCRAFT
SEATTLE, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing Defense & Space Group

announced today it plans to offer the modern Model 767 jetliner as the new aircraft platform for the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). The 767 will replace the venerable 707, which is no longer in production.
"We will be offering customers the advantages of an in-production aircraft built with up-to-date airframe technology," said B. Dan Pinick, Defense & Space Group president. "The 767 is the airframe that best matches the 707's capability for the AWACS mission," he said.
Four hundred of the 767 aircraft are in operation with 48 of the world's airlines, flying both overland and transoceanic routes. An additional 186 are on order.
Boeing is conducting in-depth studies to define the 767 modifications required to perform the AWACS mission, and upon completion of the studies, will determine price and availability of the new platform.
Although the company will offer a new airframe for the AWACS mission, Pinick said the 767 AWACS will continue to use the same radars, computers, consoles and communication equipment that made AWACS the key to the successful air campaign during the Gulf War.
"This mission equipment has a proven track record and is interoperable with the AWACS fleets of the U.S., NATO, Saudi Arabia, France and the United Kingdom," Pinick said. He added that mission equipment improvement programs already have begun for existing fleets.
Boeing also is studying the 767 as a platform for other military applications, which could include ground surveillance and special- purpose aircraft.
Sixty-eight of the 707-based AWACS were produced. Deliveries began in 1977, and will end next spring when installation of mission equipment and flight testing are complete on the seventh and final AWACS for the United Kingdom.
