BOEING TO COMMEMORATE B-29 SUPERFORTRESS 50TH ANNIVERSARY
AT MUSEUM OF FLIGHT/BOEING FIELD AUG. 14-16
The 50th anniversary of the first flight of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress will be commemorated Aug. 14-16 at the Museum of Flight and Boeing Field in Seattle, Boeing Defense & Space Group said today. On Friday, Aug. 14, veterans who flew and maintained the Superforts will gather for a private reunion with fellow crew members.
At 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, two former crew members of the venerable B-29, as well as a number of designers and builders of the Superfortress, will be available to the news media for individual interviews. Press kits, historical photos and video news clips will be available for pick-up.
In addition, thousands of veterans (with plenty of their own recollections) will be on site recounting their experiences with fellow crew members.
"Fifi," the only flying B-29 in existence today, will be next door to the museum, as will a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, P-51 Mustang, C-97 Stratofreighter, B-52 Stratofortress, KC-135 Stratotanker and a B-1B bomber.
The three-day event also will feature guest lecturers and graphic displays of the plane's 50 years.
Boeing employees, retirees and their immediate families will be able to take part in the commemorative event on Saturday, Aug. 15. The general public is invited to join in the gathering on Sunday, Aug. 16. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m.
The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 East Marginal Way South at the southwest corner of Boeing Field. Take exit No. 158 from I-5. News media parking is available alongside the right-hand shoulder of the museum's south entrance. Please proceed to the news media tent for credentials.
