PALMDALE - Boeing says it won't have to lay off as many space shuttle space shuttle, reusable U.S. space vehicle. Boeing plans to lay off workers following the completion of modification work on Columbia, which is scheduled to begin its return to Florida on Feb. 24. Boeing notified workers in the fall that the layoffs were coming.

Columbia has been in Palmdale since September 1999 for 80 major modifications and a series of inspections, including detailed examinations of the orbiter's wiring.

Discovery is scheduled to make two flights to the International Space Station before coming to Palmdale. The first mission, originally scheduled for March 1, is now listed for March 8 because of delays to a mission to be flown by the orbiter Atlantis.

Another mission for Discovery will occur next summer.
