BOCA RESEARCH FIRST TO LICENSE ADTRAN'S INSTANT ISDN TECHNOLOGY: Patent Pending Technology Makes ISDN Configuration Easier than Ever Before.

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1996--Boca Research, Inc. (NASDAQ:BOCI) and ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) jointly announced today that they have entered into a licensing agreement, making Boca Research the first company to license ADTRAN's new Instant ISDN technology (patent pending).

Instant ISDN is ADTRAN's powerful Automatic SPID Detection technology for Basic Rate ISDN terminal equipment. Using this new technology, a buyer of a Boca Research ISDN digital modem merely has to enter the new telephone number assigned by the local phone company for the ISDN service, and the ISDN device takes care of the setup process. This contrasts with the present situation in which the user must know and properly enter information such as SPIDS and switch type.

According to Danny Windham, vice president of marketing for ADTRAN, "Until now, even with the proper information, configuring a new ISDN device to work with the service was often frustrating. The Instant ISDN technology developed by ADTRAN allows the ISDN device to query the telephone switch, determine the proper setup parameters, and then configure itself accordingly. This greatly simplifies the setup process, gets the user up and running quickly, and makes the service more user friendly."

ISDN has taken on a resurgent interest recently as a result of the overwhelming need for speed when accessing the Internet or connecting to remote networks for work at home. Through Instant ISDN technology, RBOCs (Regional Bell Operating Companies) should be able to penetrate the untapped consumer market, mirroring the successful ISDN market implementation and maturation that exists in Europe and Japan.

EZ-ISDN ordering codes, guidelines which resulted from a consortium of telecommunications service providers and ISDN manufacturers, were implemented late in 1995 and have significantly helped to simplify the ordering process. However, the Instant ISDN technology from ADTRAN goes a substantial step further by actually getting the ISDN device up and running with the new service.

The new technology will be incorporated into Boca Research ISDN products by the end of 1996.
