The BOC Gases accreditation from The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) received last year at its Royal Oak facility was the first for any special gases company in the U.S. The ISO 17025 accreditation formally recognizes BOC's quality system for testing activities, as well as its technical competence in the determination of valid analytical test results. "To assure data integrity and minimize risk, our customers need to have confidence in their supplier's quality and competence," says John Long, national quality manager for BOC's special products. "In addition, this certification will translate into a lower total cost of ownership for our customers," Long added. "In combination with our ISO 9001:2000 certification, the ISO 17025 accreditation should demonstrate BOC's commitment to excellence in the production of calibration gases," notes Long. Established in 1978, A2LA is a non-profit, public service, membership society endorsed by multiple federal and state agencies for their programs of assessment, verification and accreditation of calibration and testing laboratories. Additionally, A2LA holds several mutual recognition arrangements with other laboratory accreditation systems within the United States and around the globe, resulting in recognition of BOC's ISO 17025 accreditation by more than forty (40) economies worldwide. In order to achieve accreditation, BOC was required to demonstrate to A2LA its technical competence in performing specific analytical testing of environmental and NIST traceable gas mixtures. BOC also was required to evidence a program for the maintenance and operation of a quality system that addresses and conforms to all elements of the international standard.
