BOB HOPE CHRYSLER CLASSIC: ALLENBY FINDS THE LEAD.

Byline: MARK REINHILLER Staff Writer

PALM DESERT -- Robert Allenby Robert Allenby (born 12 July 1971) is an Australian professional golfer.

Allenby was born in Melbourne. He turned professional in 1992 and was soon successful, topping the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit in his first season and again in 1994.

Part of the PGA Tour's early season West Coast Swing, this tournament is well known for its celebrity pro-am, as well as having five daily 18-hole rounds of  on Wednesday, but not as well as the scoreboard showed at La Quinta Country Club.

was trying to be nice to me, but I don't think he was all there today,'' said Allenby, who fired a 9-under-par 63 at La Quinta Country Club after ``supposedly'' closing in on a potential round of 60. ``Every time I made a birdie, he came up trying to shake my hand. Not quite sure what the situation was there.''

Alllenby, in fact, played a bogey-free round with nine birdies for a two-shot lead over Mark Calcavecchia Mark John Calcavecchia (born June 12, 1960) is an American golfer.

Calcavecchia was born in Laurel, Nebraska. He attended the University of Florida, turned professional in 1981 and joined the PGA Tour in 1982. He earned All-SEC honors in 1979.
and Craig Kanada Craig Andrew Kanada (born October 2, 1968) is an American professional golfer. He was born in Portland, Oregon.

Kanada currently plays on the PGA Tour. He was previously a member of the PGA Tour in 1997 and 2001.
after the first round of play in the five-round, 90-hole tournament.

Allenby would have been hard-pressed to play any better. He was a perfect 14 of 14 on fairways, 18 of 18 on greens in regulation and needed 30 putts for the day.

Not bad for someone who got to the course without his putter in his bag and dealt with an hour delay due to a frost advisory.

``The greens were absolutely perfect to putt on,'' he said. ``I mean, they are probably some of the truest greens we ever get to putt on at La Quinta. They had a great speed on them. I felt like I was going to make everything.''

The frost advisory also delayed play for 30 minutes at Bermuda Dunes Country Club, and 45 minutes at both Classic Club and PGA West due to record cold temperatures throughout Southern California. Once play began, temperatures rose with little wind.

Calcavecchia played his 65 at Classic Club, the tourney- owned course now in its second year of existence.

He also played bogey-free, after missing the cut by one stroke at last week's Sony Open in Hawaii The Sony Open in Hawaii is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, and is part of the tour's FedEx Cup Series. It has been contested at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii since the event's modern-day inception in 1965. .

The delay and the weather played havoc with tourney favorite Phil Mickelson, who is playing in his first event since the Ryder Cup in September. He fired a 2-under 70 at La Quinta in a round that featured two bogeys and a double bogey through four holes.

Jason Gore (Hart High of Newhall) shot a first-round 66 and is tied for fourth.
