BOB HOPE BUSINESS BOOMING PASSENGER TRAFFIC RISES 7 PERCENT IN THE FIRST QUARTER.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

BURBANK - Passenger traffic continues to climb at Bob Hope Airport Bob Hope Airport (IATA: BUR, ICAO: KBUR, FAA LID: BUR) is a regional and national airport located in Burbank, California, United States.

It was formerly known as United Airport (1930-1934); Union Air Terminal (1934-1940);
, and officials expect a busy summer.

The number of passengers traveling through the Burbank airport rose more than 7 percent in the first three months of 2005 compared with the same period last year - from 1.12 million to 1.21 million - the biggest first-quarter jump since the 9-11 attacks.

It followed a 5.9 percent increase in the last quarter of 2004.

``I think most airports are going to experience a pretty busy summer because people are flying again. ... They're not afraid to get on the planes anymore,'' said Charles Lombardo, president of the Burbank- Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

 is the biggest user of Bob Hope Airport, usually accounting for more than 65 percent of passenger traffic. While other airlines have struggled, Southwest has stayed competitive, said Jack Kyser, chief economist The Chief Economist is a single position job class having primary responsibility for the development, coordination, and production of economic and financial analysis. ``They're a very well-run operation. They've been able to hedge their fuel costs, which few other airlines have done, and they operate very lean and mean,'' Kyser said.

Another contributor to the increased passenger traffic at Bob Hope Airport was Delta Air Lines, which in January began a daily nonstop HP's brand name for its fault-tolerant servers, which range in size from four CPUs to 4,000 CPUs. The NonStop line was created by Tandem Computers, which was acquired by Compaq, which later became part of HP.  flight to Atlanta and flights to Salt Lake City through SkyWest.

Those flights accounted for 26,984 passengers during the first quarter.

With more flights and bigger planes, JetBlue could bring 20,000 passengers a month through the airport, compared with the 5,000 a month that Aloha attracted, said Victor Gill, a spokesman for the airport authority.

``I would say the trend is upward right now, and summer is always the busy travel season,'' Gill said.

Spring break came early this year, landing in the first quarter instead of the second quarter, helping push up the passenger count. Another push came from the rising cost of gasoline gasoline or petrol, light, volatile mixture of hydrocarbons for use in the internal-combustion engine and as an organic solvent, obtained primarily by fractional distillation and "cracking" of petroleum, but also obtained from natural gas, by , which made flying more economical than a road trip for some consumers, analysts said. While more families went camping or stayed close to home after Sept. 11, 2001, those travel patterns have changed even as airfares have started to rise, said Cathy Keefe, a spokeswoman for the Travel Industry Association of America.

And with more passengers coming into Bob Hope Airport, Burbank businesses are expected to benefit.

``People passing through, a lot of times they're renting cars, they may be traveling on business so they stay at local hotels, eat out. An airline passenger generally means business for someone in the vicinity,'' Kyser said.

In 2003, 4.7 million passengers passed through Bob Hope Airport, bringing its numbers back to pre-9-11 levels. The airport had 4.9 million passengers in 2004, just under its all-time high, set in 1995.
