Shaun Lee Broderick, 19, of Newhall and Christopher Crawford, 25, of Lancaster have pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon Assault with a Deadly Weapon is the term used to describe the act of threatening to harm one or more people by using a weapon (usually a firearm). Here, assault must be differentiated from battery as they are often confused. Assault is threatening to use force.  by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

Investigators allege that the two attacked Nathaniel Harris, 20, after he spoke to a white woman with them in a Wal-Mart parking lot about 11:30 p.m. last Tuesday.

Authorities allege Broderick used a claw hammer on Harris and tried to run over him with a car.

Harris was gathering shopping carts in the lot on Valley Central Way when he spotted a young woman he thought he knew from high school and began talking to her, authorities said. He was unaware that the two men with her were skinheads.

The suspects may be members of the Nazi Low Riders, according to prosecutors.

Harris was hit in the upper body with the hammer and punched by the second man, investigators said. A Wal-Mart security guard pulled the men off Harris, who was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Deputies who stopped Broderick and Crawford found ``white power'' slogans scribbled on a notebook in the car and a swastika etched on a flashlight, authorities said. They also found Nazi-style tattoos on one of the suspects.
