BOARD OKS RENAMING OF PARKWAY.

Byline: Lisa Van Proyen Daily News Staff Writer

In a victory of community identity over community heritage, a 1-1/2-mile stretch of McBean Parkway west of the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  (5) will soon be renamed Stevenson Ranch Stevenson Ranch, California (in the 91381 ZIP Code) is a Los Angeles County, USA, unincorporated community west of Santa Clarita a few miles south of Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is the five member governing board of Los Angeles County, California. Members of the board of supervisors are elected by district, the current members as of April 2006 are:

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  and unincorporated Los Angeles County land.

Stevenson Ranch officials said the decision supports what the estimated 5,000-person community requested: a sense of community identity.

``We do have a special identity west of Interstate 5. . .It will allow us to market what we do in a more effective way,'' said Richard Rioux, president of the Stevenson Ranch Town Council.

But Santa Clarita officials argue that the name change will only confuse passers-by and take away from the community's heritage.

McBean Parkway, which also traverses about six miles within the city of Santa Clarita, was named after Atholl McBean, a businessman who saved Newhall Land in the 1930s from family shareholders who left it in the red, according to Ruth Newhall's ``California Legends, a History of the Newhall Land and Farming Co.''

McBean's efforts led to the Newhall Land's success, with the company later building the town of Valencia and honoring McBean with the street name. McBean died more than 30 years ago.

The Newhall Land and Farming Co., as well as city officials and area historians want to preserve the name of the main route built in 1965 through Valencia.

The Santa Clarita City Council had recommended to the Board of Supervisors not to change the name.

``If every community was doing this, it would be confusing when trying to find a business,'' said Gail Ortiz, spokeswoman for Santa Clarita.

Santa Clarita already has several streets that break off onto other street names, confusing motorists, city officials said.

Stevenson Ranch officials argue that people will understand the change.

``I think people are smarter than other people give them credit for. The freeway is a clear line of demarcation line of demarcation

The Los Angeles Department of Public Works will be installing the new sign names on local streets, while the California Department of Transportation The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is a government agency in the U.S. state of California. Its mission is to improve mobility across the state.
