BOARD OKS LIMIT ON USAGE OF SUVS.

Byline: Andrea Cavanaugh Staff Writer

The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to adopt a policy severely limiting the county government's use of sport utility vehicles This page lists sports utility vehicles currently in production (as of April 2007), as well as past models. The list includes crossover SUVs, Mini SUVs, Compact SUVs and other similar vehicles. .

Ventura County is believed to be the first local government in the state to adopt rules limiting SUV purchases.

Beginning in January 2005, California's state agencies will be required to demonstrate a critical need before purchasing an SUV.

Supervisor Steve Bennett The name Steve Bennett refers to more than one person:

proposed the new rules to save money on fuel costs, reduce emissions and ``discourage the proliferation and overuse'' of SUVs.

Under the new rules, SUVs cannot be used as regular work vehicles unless department supervisors can demonstrate a weekly need for off-road driving or other unusual circumstances.

Departments whose employees have an occasional need to drive an SUV should share a small number of pool vehicles, the new policy states.

With 36 of the vehicles, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Ventura County Sheriff's Department (VCSD) provides law enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, USA, as well as several cities within the county. The cities that VCSD serves are Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, and Thousand Oaks.  uses more SUVs than any other county agency. Unlike the new state law, Ventura County's policy makes no exemption for law enforcement vehicles.

Sheriff Bob Brooks believes all are vital to the department, said spokesman Eric Nishimoto, who drives one of the SUVs.

``I have no doubt we'll make a case for the SUVs we think are necessary,'' Nishimoto said.
