BOARD MEETS CANDIDATES FOR JANSSEN'S JOB.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County supervisors interviewed four candidates Monday to succeed Chief Administrative Officer A chief administrative officer (CAO) is responsible for administrative management of private, public or governmental corporations. The CAO is one of the highest ranking members of an organization, managing daily operations and usually reporting directly to the chief executive  David Janssen, who retires next week after 34 years of public service.

The candidates include Mark Saladino, the county's treasurer and tax collector; Gilbert F. Ivey, CAO of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is the largest bulk water supplier for municipal use in the world. The name is usually shortened to the "Metropolitan Water District" or simply "MWD". ; Sandra L. Vargas, administrator of Hennepin County, Minn.; and Wally Hill, deputy administrator of Hillsborough County Hillsborough County is the name of two counties in the United States:
  • Hillsborough County, Florida, including Tampa
  • Hillsborough County, New Hampshire
, Fla.

Janssen, who used an executive recruiting firm, then narrowed the list of finalists for the supervisors' consideration, said the board is expected to make a decision soon.

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said the county engaged in an exhaustive search and has strong candidates.

``The interview isn't sufficient to get the job, but it's necessary, and it gives the board an opportunity to go eyeball-to-eyeball with the candidate and see how they respond to questions, what their vision is, what are the things they are most proud of and the things they would do over again.''

Saladino has a law degree from New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the  and has served as the county's treasurer and tax collector since 1998, overseeing a department with 554 employees and a $64 million annual budget.

 for 35 years, rising through the ranks to become chief administrative officer. He oversees a $15 million budget, in addition to administration, human resources and business outreach.

Vargas, who has a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University, has served since 1999 as the Hennepin County administrator in Minneapolis, overseeing a $2 billion budget and 12,000 employees. The county has a population of more than a million people.

Hill has a master's degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public, coeducational, research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. As the deputy county administrator in Hillsborough County, Fla., he helps oversee a county with a $3.8 billion budget, 10,000 employees and 1.1 million people.

He also served as the San Bernardino County administrative officer from April 2003 to March 2004.

Los Angeles County Human Resources Director Michael J. Henry had been tapped as one of five finalists, but dropped out, citing personal reasons.
