BOARD KILLS AVIATION-MECHANICS CURRICULUM CLASSES MAY BE REVIVED, WITH AID FROM BUSINESSES.

GLENDALE - Glendale Community College Glendale Community College can refer to one of two colleges in the United States.

officials voted Friday to drop the campus's 60-year-old aviation-mechanics program, but could revive it in the future under a different format.

About 70 people attended the meeting, including a handful of aviation- industry executives who offered to set up scholarships for students.

``We're obviously disappointed that we're not allowed to continue, but now the question remains if we'll continue to exist at all,'' said Scott Rubke, aviation department chairman. ``We're going to continue to talk to the administration about continuing this program, because once this is undone permanently, it will never come back.''

One possibility is running the classes with fees through the campus's community service program, which doesn't offer college credits. The board will consider that option at a future meeting.

``Although we voted to discontinue this particular program, we haven't closed the door on it,'' board member Armine Hacopian said. ``Hopefully, we'll come up with creative ideas to maintain the program.''

If there is hope to continue the program, Rubke said they would meet with the aviation-business community to seek financial support.

The school will help students who have not completed the program by fall to relocate into the programs at either Mount San Antonio Mount San Antonio, better known to most in Los Angeles as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, USA and the highest point in Los Angeles County. But Phil Samuelian, one of the 21 students in the program, said he still hopes he'll be able to receive the mechanics training at the college.

``So far, I have my hopes up that the issue is not dead, that we can resolve this and keep the program open not only for our classes but for future generations and the aviation industry.''
