The American fired a four-under-par 68 at Trump International Golf Club in the second round of the event, holing six birdies against two bogeys.

He said: "I wanted to try to take advantage of coming down here. I didn't want to just waste a trip and so I was definitely focused coming in."

With an overall score of 12-under 132, Van Pelt held a one-shot advantage over Jerry Kelly Jerome Patrick Kelly (born November 23, 1966) is an American golfer.

Kelly was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Hartford in 1989 and turned professional that year, but didn't make it onto the PGA Tour until 1996.
, who finished the day with a six-under 66.

Kelly said: "I missed a few short putts, but made some of the longer ones. Sometimes the longer ones, you can give them a good run."

Van Pelt, who shot a 64 on day one, was even through nine holes in his second round before finding his stroke.

After struggling through the back nine, Van Pelt birdied the next two holes before bogeying number three.

He said: "I got a little bit tentative on the back nine. I fought on a couple swings and had to kind of nip that in the bud and go ahead and stay aggressive.

"I did that when I came over to the front side and was able to make quite a few more birdies."

Van Pelt then birdied three of his final six holes to end the round.

Ted Purdy, who entered day two tied for second, fired a four-under 68 and sat in third place at 10 under.

This event is the first full-field sanctioned USPGA Tour tournament ever held in Puerto Rico.
