Northamptonshire Police said they were "very disappointed" that election leaflets for the farright party were sent to residents with their own literature..

They were delivered with the May 2009 edition of the force's Home Beat newsletter, a biannual publication designed to update residents in the county on their police force.

Northamptonshire Police said members of the public had reported that a range of different flyers had been delivered with their newsletter - including election pamphlets for other political parties and leaflets advertising businesses and services.

A police spokesman said: "We are an a-political organisation and we wouldn't would·n't

"These leaflets have been inserted and distributed by Royal Mail, without our knowledge or consent, and we are very disappointed that this has happened. We were not aware that it had happened until members of the public contacted us.

"We have taken this matter up with the Royal Mail, to whom we have made a formal complaint."
