BNI Awarded Contract to Assist in Construction of Russian Facility That Will Store Fissile Material From Dismantled Nuclear Weapons.

) will assist in developing the Russian Fissile Material Storage Facility at a site near the Russian city of Oziorsk, about 1,500 miles southeast of Moscow. The project will be a joint effort involving both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Transatlantic Programs Center and the Russian Federation's Ministry of Atomic Energy atomic energy: see nuclear energy. .

Bechtel has signed a $2.5 million contract covering the initial year of the project, with four one-year options to follow. The company will serve as design and construction contractor on the assignment, providing support to a Russian contractor in the areas of design, equipment, materials, construction and construction management.

Further details regarding the future scope of the contract will be resolved as work progresses.

Construction at the Oziorsk site has already been started by the Russian construction agent. Once completed the complex will include 21 concrete and masonry buildings.

The primary purpose of the Russian facility will be to safely store fissile material from nuclear weapons. Among the structures at the site will be a train unloading building that will serve as a receiving, testing, temporary storage, preparation and assay area. Within the structure, the materials will be moved through various inspection and analysis stages using a series of overhead cranes, conveyors and carts. Ultimately, the material will be moved into adjacent storage buildings.
