MVS is a batch processing-oriented operating system that manages large amounts of memory and disk space.  database tools.

These new products allow the growing number of DB2 customers to improve performance, increase data availability Refers to the degree to which data can be instantly accessed. BMC was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.  also announced a major new release of DATA PACKER(R) for DB2(a), as well as product shipment of PACLOG(TM).

"DB2 plays a critical role in running our various business units," said Clark H. Josephs, systems programmer, Online Systems for Ciba Corp. "If our system goes down for even 24 hours, we're out of business. To ensure our DB2 system stays on line, we rely on BMC (BMC Software, Inc., Houston, TX, www.bmc.com) A leading supplier of software that supports and improves the availability, performance, and recovery of applications in complex computing environments.  Software's tools for DB2."

BMC Software's Commitment to DB2

"BMC Software is committed to supporting DB2 as a key component of our overall product strategy to give customers comprehensive database tools for DB2, IMS (1) See IP Multimedia Subsystem.

and open systems environments," said Leslie Butterfield, product marketing manager for BMC Software. "BMC currently offers 26 DB2 products and has introduced 7 new DB2 products, and numerous new versions of existing products, this year."

BMC Software's 26 DB2 product offerings are in the areas of data administration, high-speed utilities, backup and recovery, performance management and data compression. In addition to the company's recent product announcements, BMC Software has partnered with Princeton Softech to incorporate their application development productivity products into BMC Software's DB2 product line. These products include Move for DB2, Access for DB2 and the Client/Server Import Facility.

New and Updated DB2 Products

BMC Software's new and updated products for DB2 include:

-- DATA PACKER Version 3.0 gives customers multiple data compression options to reduce DASD (Direct Access Storage Device) Pronounced "daz-dee." A peripheral device that is directly addressable, such as a disk or drum. The term is used in the mainframe world.

-- EXCEPTOR Automatically and dynamically acts on DB2 performance information before business processes are impacted, improving overall DB2 performance and availability.

-- LOGMAX Provides push-button (electronics) push-button - A roughly fingertip-sized plastic cover attached to a spring-loaded, normally-open switch, which, when pressed, closes the switch. Typical examples are the keys on a computer or calculator keyboard and mouse buttons.  access to the DB2 log and the ability to use DB2 log information in new and innovative ways. Exclusive features include comprehensive audit reporting, data migration and the ability to correct problem transactions.

-- PACLOG Now shipping, the product reduces the size of DB2 logs up to 95 percent, enabling customers to reduce the amount of DASD allocated to archive logs, recover DB2 data more quickly and easily and reduce network transmission times in support of disaster recovery.

-- SQL RECALL An addition to the DB2 performance management product family, the product improves DB2 performance by storing results from repetitive queries in cache and accessing them as needed as needed prn. See prn order. . This increases CPU CPU

The Growing Market for DB2

Although the DB2 market is maturing, many new customers are expected to purchase DB2 licenses in the coming years. According to the Gartner Group, as of August 1995, there were approximately 7,100 DB2 licenses worldwide. This number is expected to grow at the rate of 300 new licenses per year. Even more significant is the importance of DB2 to existing customers. According to BMC Software, the company's average customer has 87 DB2 applications in production and 18 applications in development. And customers who are using DB2 say that 35 percent of their company's critical data resides in DB2.

IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  also is continuing to enhance DB2. With IBM's general availability announcement of DB2 Version 4, customers will soon gain new functionality and performance with DB2. To allow customers to take advantage of this new version, the majority of BMC Software's products for DB2 will support Version 4 at the time of general availability.

Quality Products and Support

With so many customers relying on DB2 to run their businesses, product quality and support are very important considerations. BMC Software has earned its reputation of providing quality products and backing them up with responsive technical support.

"BMC Software's products are a God-send," said Josephs. "The quality of their products guarantee that we have complete system integrity which translates into data integrity and availability. Without these products, our businesses would not be able to operate the way they do today. In addition, BMC Software's support is the best in this galaxy. Every time I call, my questions are answered without having to wait. No one provides better support. It's very impressive."
