HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 1995--BMC Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:BMCS) Monday underscored its continued focus on delivering increased performance capabilities by announcing DATA ACCELERATOR.

The product is an intelligent software solution that gives customers 60 to 90 percent increased performance by improving I/0 (Input/Output) efficiency and reducing elapsed time between batch jobs. Because of DATA ACCELERATOR's automatic tuning capabilities, IS staff can become more productive and are better able to meet today's shrinking batch windows.

DATA ACCELERATOR

DATA ACCELERATOR is the first in a series of BMC Software products that enhance performance in both conventional bi-polar and new parallel processing environments for MVS. As users adopt new parallel technologies and hardware platforms, DATA ACCELERATOR will help address important issues such as slower processor speeds, effectively completing batch processing and continuously shrinking batch windows.

DATA ACCELERATOR reduces batch elapsed times up to 60 percent for I/0 intensive applications and offers additional performance enhancements for online transaction processing systems. The product also reduces I/Os up to 80 percent for VSAM data sets, and up to 90 percent for non-VSAM data sets. DATA ACCELERATOR achieves these performance gains by using advanced, intelligent techniques to reduce the number of disk accesses and, through "fuzzy logic", to learn the application's data access patterns for dynamic performance tuning. DATA ACCELERATOR requires no JCL (Job Control Language) or program changes and transparently improves access to VSAM and non-VSAM data sets without requiring time- and resource-consuming I/0 monitoring, statistical analysis or user intervention.

Another important feature of DATA ACCELERATOR is its ability, via an optional data compression component, to offer reduced physical storage requirements. This provides BMC Software Extends Enterprise Performance Product Family significant cost savings by delaying or eliminating the need to purchase additional storage capacity. By compressing or reducing the size of records, DATA ACCELERATOR reduces the load placed on I/0 processing and improves CICS response times. The product uses a new Expert Compression Feature (ECF)(TM) to provide improvements in hardware emulation compression techniques that can actually match the performance of hardware compression.

Future of Mainframe Databases

Though some companies are migrating to client/server strategies, mainframe databases on MVS remain a viable choice when it comes to ensuring the stability, integrity and security of customers' business-critical data. According to a recent report by analyst firm Gartner Group, "Support for flat files, indexed files (e.g. VSAM and RSM) and legacy DBMSs is critical, since 85 percent of corporate data is maintained in data stores of this type."
