BMC Software's AppSight Achieves Ready for IBM Rational Software Validation; New Integrations Streamline Application Problem Resolution Workflows for the Rational Software Development Platform.

IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Rational software validation The certification that an information system has been implemented correctly and that it conforms to the functional specifications derived from the original requirements. Such validation is often performed by a third party consulting organization. .

"This validation clearly signals IBM Rational development shops that they can easily integrate AppSight's problem resolution capabilities into their development, test, and support processes," said Yochi Slonim, vice president and general manager, Transaction Management, BMC Software BMC Software, Inc. "AppSight has been proven by more than 500 development organizations to reduce test cycles, accelerate application delivery, reduce support costs, and improve the availability and performance of business-critical applications."

BMC AppSight is validated for integration with the IBM Rational Software Development Platform via a process called "Ready for IBM Rational software." The new integrations between BMC AppSight and IBM Rational ClearQuest Rational ClearQuest is a work-flow automation tool (in particular bug tracking system) from the Rational Software division of IBM. The tool can be linked to Microsoft Project to create ordered steps for resources assigned to specific goals.  enhance the application development lifecycle by automating and accelerating the tasks of application problem resolution--one of the most time-consuming and costly processes throughout the application lifecycle.

BMC AppSight's integration with IBM Rational ClearQuest enables two critical problem resolution workflows: problem resolution in quality assurance (QA) and in ongoing production support.

Operating much like the "black box" flight recorder flight recorder

on an aircraft, BMC AppSight automates manual information gathering, completely eliminates problem recreation, and provably accelerates the root cause analysis process by as much as 80 percent.

Using the integrated solution, a QA engineer who uncovers a problem can use BMC AppSight to capture the actual problem history in an AppSight Black Box log file, which is linked to an IBM Rational ClearQuest incident report. This eliminates the time-consuming tasks of problem replication and documentation, which can account for 30 percent to 50 percent of a tester's productive time. Developers can then analyze the Black Box log to determine the root cause--which completely eliminates the need to first recreate the environment or the problem, and also eliminates irreproducible problems (reported in QA, but not reproducible in Development).

When a problem occurs in the production environment, BMC AppSight can automatically attach the Black Box log file to an existing IBM Rational ClearQuest incident (if it already exists), or create a new incident report. By automating information gathering and eliminating the need to reproduce the production environment and replicate the problem, AppSight offers significant benefits to the end-user, the support engineer, and the development team, who are often involved in the production problem resolution process.
