United had been the front- runner since placing the first bid September 18, and beat out four undisclosed bidders in a court-mandated auction. If approved by the court, United will pay $8.4 million, bringing it 165,000 new subscribers. Analysts agree Bluelight, which was losing $100 million annually for the bankrupt BANKRUPT. Bluelight's vice president of communications, Dave Karraker, agreed, saying the sale allowed Kmart to deal with its more pressing concerns. ``It makes sense to sell it to a company with years of experience with ISPs,'' Karraker said. ``It gives us capital and lets us focus on our stores - which is what we should be doing right now, and taking care of our customers.'' Seeking to cut the tremendous losses the startup generated, Kmart began charging an $8.95 monthly fee for the service, cutting its subscriber base to its current 165,000. Though the $8.4 million winning bid ran slightly higher than analysts' early projections, they said the investment would soon pay for itself. By dividing the price by the number of users, those familiar with United's stock said the deal was a fair one. ``At 50 bucks a subscription, that's well below what ISPs typically pay to gain new subscribers,'' said Fred Moran Moran equitable councillor to King Feredach. Though analyst Youssef Squali of First Albany Corp. said United typically pays in the $40 range per subscriber to generate new users on its own, he noted that the deal would grow its subscriber base by 10 percent, making it worthwhile. At that price, he said, United will begin making money on the deal after only six months. The ISP was hesitant hes·i·tant adj. ``It hasn't closed yet, but we're following along with the legal procedure,'' a United spokesman said. ``Hopefully by Oct. 30, the court will let us know.'' But Ulysses Yannas, an analyst for New York-based brokerage Buckman, Buckman & Reid, said the court approval was all but assured. With Kmart struggling its way out of Chapter 11, he pointed out, the firm needs to cut its losses quickly. ``I would be shocked if the court told them no,'' he said. ``It would mean they think they could get substantially more, but if they delay another three months, that's another $25 million down the drain.'' |
