BLUE CROSS SEEKS TOP SENIOR VOLUNTEERS IN AWARD NAMED FOR FOUNDER
CLEVELAND, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Ohio (BCBSO) Senior Advisory Councils are launching their third annual statewide search for outstanding grassroots senior volunteers who bring energy and a healthier quality of life to other seniors.
The award is named in honor of John Mannix, the founder of the Cleveland-based Blue Cross Plan and a nationally recognized health-care leader, who died in 1990 at the age of 87.
"As a tribute to John Mannix and to all seniors who create their own prescriptions for healthy and happy lives, we have created this unique volunteer award. We're looking for top volunteers who don't necessarily make headlines, count hours or vie for titles, but who make a real difference in the lives of other seniors," said John Burry, Jr., BCBSO chairman and chief executive officer.
Previous winners include an advocate for rural elderly, who made his dream from a senior center a reality; a retired Cleveland steelworker known as the "candy man," who has made his weekly candy giveaways to public nursing home residents his trademark; a friend to mentally ill seniors who pierces once silent shells and recruits still more volunteers; a spark for independence who developed a senior-run convenient store within her own group residence, and a retired restaurateur who makes house calls to teach other seniors to cook nutritional, affordable meals.
Blue Cross employees and former employees, their immediate families, and current volunteers on BCBSO Senior Advisory Councils, who will select award winners, are ineligible for nomination. Blue Cross Medifil customers may be nominated, but nominees need not carry Medicare supplementary insurance with Blue Cross to be nominated.
One winner and five statewide finalists will be honored at the awards luncheon on Feb. 9, at Swingo's Terrace Room, the Statler Office Tower, Cleveland. The event is hosted by Cleveland television personality Del Donahoo of WKYC. Each winner receives a personalized award, and the growing list of winners is on a permanent display plaque at BCBSO corporate headquarters.
More than 500 nomination forms have been mailed to senior centers throughout the state. Deadline for entries is Nov. 6. For additional information, nomination guidelines and application form, call the Mannix Award line in Greater Cleveland, 216-696-7753; in Greater Toledo, 419-473-6116.
