BLOODCURDLING...

HAVING SPENT HALF of our waking hours between November and January researching the special features in our end-of-the-century retrospectives, we felt it was only fitting to research the one high-school record that has never ceased to amaze us--the all-time winning basketball streak of 159 games compiled by Passaic (NJ) High School from 1919 to 1925.

The record may be found in the National Federation Sports Record Book, and we can add the name of the coach who accounted for most of it--Ernest Blood. (We found it in a Bob Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not paperback.)

All the other facts seemed to have vanished in time. Where did that leave us? Obviously, www.com. Shocker--it struck out. Now, where to look? Doug Huff, considered the Maven of Lost High School Records.

We placed a call to him at the West Virginia West Virginia, E central state of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland (N), Virginia (E and S), and Kentucky and, across the Ohio R., Ohio (W). Facts and Figures

Ernest Blood Ernest A. Blood (October 4, 1872 in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States - February 5, 1955) was a former high school and college men's basketball coach. Between 1915 and 1924 he coached Passaic High School to a remarkable 200-1 record.  (he informed us) coached 9 years at Passaic and compiled a record of 200-1. He left Passaic in 1925 with a winning streak of 147 games and 5 unbeaten seasons. The streak came to an end at 159 the following season.

"And one thing more," the Huff voice rolled on relentlessly. "Blood went on to coach 1,461 games, winning 1,296 and losing 165 for a lifetime winning percentage of .890."

That was the end of our Blood transfusion blood transfusion, transfer of blood from one person to another, or from one animal to another of the same species. Transfusions are performed to replace a substantial loss of blood and as supportive treatment in certain diseases and blood disorders. . Score: Blood, .890, Huff, 1.000.
