BLOODCURDLING BARN; HALLOWEEN COMES EARLY ON THE RANCH.

In just three days, a model maker, a theme-park expert, a filmmaker and special-effects and makeup artists had transformed stalls into such things as a lab for a mad scientist, a mummy's tomb, a cemetery and a torture chamber.

The transformation was made to raise funds for the ranch's 10-year-old Handicapped Equestrian equestrian

Peters did not get the crowd of 3,000 to 4,000 he had hoped the Halloween fund-raiser would attract.

The Moorpark Melodrama theater loaned enough props for the scene designers to convert the entire barn. For example, the designers made a mummy's pyramid from the Melodrama's fireplace.

``All of these are original,'' said Harry Evry, one of the designers. ``We just kind of start throwing stuff in here.''

Horses in two of the stalls spent one weekend night in the barn of horrors, but then were moved.

``The horses, we discovered, do not like fog machines A fog machine (also called a smoke machine) is a device which emits a dense vapor that appears similar to fog or smoke. This artificial fog or smoke is known as theatrical smoke and fog within the entertainment industry. ,'' Evry said.
