BLOOD SUPPLIES MAY BE DRAINED BY KATRINA NEED.

Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Blood supplies in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. ``We have about a day's supply of O positive; we prefer to have about three to four days' supply,'' he said. ``In case of a natural disaster, we need to have blood available, and it takes a couple of days to process, so really five to seven days are ideal.''

Numark said that blood drives such as the one conducted Tuesday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital helped significantly. Hospital spokeswoman Bhavna Mistry said that the hospital's last drive in June resulted in the collection of 89 pints.

``It's very difficult to keep blood in store in Southern California,'' Numark said. ``We run limited supplies of O positive and negative and B blood. Type B negative is always a worry. We usually import 40 percent of the blood we need.''

Although the request for donor blood has not reached the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area office, Numark said officials have been warned it could come any time, especially since blood collection centers in the affected areas are out of operation.

``You just need a lot of people to agree to stick out their arm and put a needle in it to save a life,'' he said.
