BLOOD SPORT; EUROPEAN MASTERS: Brett fights back after knocking out fan.

Byline: BERNIE MCGUIRE

AUSSIE star Brett Rumford Brett Rumford (born 27 July 1977) is an Australian golfer.

Rumford was born and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. He started playing golf at age ten. In 1999 he won the PGA Tour of Australasia's ANZ Players Championship as an amateur, and he turned professional the

Rumford left a woman spectator unconscious with blood pouring from her head after his opening drive went way off course.

Despite the sickening scenes he fought back to fire a stunning nine-under 62 on the Crans-sur-Sierre course in Switzerland.

Rumford said: "It makes your stomach turn when you see something like that because she had blood everywhere. It's just terrible because there's nothing you can do.

"The ball hit her just two inches above the eye so it could have been really nasty.

"But thankfully the ambulance was there pretty quickly and I heard later she was okay."

Rumford was two over after five holes but played the next 13 in 11 under as he grabbed an eagle at seven and reeled off four birdies to end his round.

While the drama belonged solely to the 2007 champion, at least Tour rookie Callum Macaulay had his share of stunning golf.

The 25-year-old Scot sunk six birdies in a three-under 68 to lie six shots behind Rumford.

Macaulay, who heads the field of eight Scots, has never played on a course as high as the Crans Crans is the name or part of the name of several places:
  • France
  • Crans, Ain, a commune in the Ain département
  • Crans, Jura, a commune in the Jura département
 layout.

Hunched The altitude could have wrecked his distances but you wouldn't have known it. He recorded just 24 putts including a 20-footer at the 18th on the Seve Ballesteros redesigned putting surfaces.

He said: "I'm really happy with a 68 and it's the first time I've ever played with a metres strokesaver because I've been so used to playing in yards throughout my career.

"It also took a bit of getting used to with the ball flying that extra bit further but all I've done is take 10 per cent off the distances.

"But I just putted really well today and 24 putts is not bad.

"I noticed something in my putting set-up this morning. I was hunched over the ball a bit too much so I straightened myself up and it's worked out well."

Macaulay travelled to the Alps lying 10 spots outside the top-115 that will retain automatic Race to Dubai membership for 2010.

But after capturing second in April's Maderia Islands Open, the Kincardine pro has battled to recapture that form with a best of 11th in last month's Czech Open.

Macaulay said: "If I can seal up my card for next year pretty soon I would be more than happy.

"But then if I can continue to putt like I did today over the remainder of my season I should be fine."

Simon Dyson Simon Dyson (born 21 December 1977 in York, England) is an English golfer.

In 1999 Dyson was runner-up in the English Amateur Championship and won the Finnish Amateur title.
is lying second just one shot behind Rumford. The in-form Englishman carded an eight-under 63 while Spaniard Miguel-Angel Jimenez, Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee Thongchai Jaidee (Thai ธงชัย ใจดี, born November 8 1969) is a Thai golfer who plays on the Asian Tour and the European Tour.

Thongchai didn't play golf until he was sixteen, and he later went into the Royal Thai Army.
, Argy Anders Romero, England's Danny Willet and Swedes Alexander Noren and Christian Nilsson are on six under.

Helensburgh's Gary Orr Gary Orr (born in Helensburgh on May 11, 1967) is a Scottish professional golfer. He turned professional in 1988 and became a member of the European Tour in 1993. His two wins on the Tour both came in 2000, at the Algarve Portuguese Open and the Victor Chandler British Masters.  is next best Scot behind Macaulay after his 69.

Warren said: "I lost it completely after that."
