With the county's blood supply running dangerously low, at least nine donor drives are scheduled in the coming days.

United Blood Service, Ventura County's sole blood provider, joined the rising toll of El Nino's victims last month as flooding and road closures resulted in a smaller than usual number of donors for the month.

``We've already brought in more than 300 pints of blood from out of state,'' said Alan Wood For other persons named Alan Wood, see Alan Wood (disambiguation).

, UBS's associate executive director. ``It's unusual for this time of year. This is the type of shortage we expect for mid-December to mid-January.''

Last month, eight of UBS' 52 planned blood drives were canceled due to poor weather conditions.

workers were hoping to replenish its supply in February following the holiday season, when the number of donors traditionally drops. But only 2,400 people donated pints, down 400 from what UBS would attract during a more sunny, driver-friendly February.

``We're now hoping to rebuild the stock in March,'' Wood said.

At any given time, UBS wants 224 pints of blood in stock - enough to last three or four days.

On Thursday, it had only 188 pints, Wood said.

Blood bank officials are particularly concerned about the shortage in type-O blood, known as a universal type nearly everyone may receive.

``We should have a total stock level of 100 (pints) of Type-O, and we have a stock level today of 31,'' Wood said.

Donors must be between ages 17 and 79, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have proper identification showing name and either date of birth or Social Security number, or have a blood-donor card.
