BLOCKED KICK SAVES PARACLETE : PARACLETE 35, MONTCLAIR PREP 34.

Byline: Bryan Rodgers Special to the Daily News

In a game that featured sparkling performances from two running backs, it was a plain old special-teams player who grabbed the glory in Paraclete High's 35-34 victory over Montclair Prep in a Division XII quarterfinal quar·ter·fi·nal

football game at Valley College on Friday night.

Joe Martin blocked Montclair Prep's conversion attempt with just over four minutes remaining to help keep alive the Spirits' bid for three consecutive Division XII titles.

Martin, a sophomore defensive back, had blocked a previous extra-point attempt by Montclair Prep (9-3) in the first quarter.

``It's ironic that those blocks make a difference,'' Martin said. ``You don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Much of the game centered around a personal war between Paraclete running back Curtis Brown

and Montclair Prep back Jerome Dennis.

Both backs put on a dazzling display of talent. Brown, a sophomore, rushed for 255 yards on 35 carries and scored four touchdowns.

His counterpart was equal to the challenge. Dennis rushed for 295 yards on 30 carries and scored four touchdowns.

While Brown and Dennis were negating each other's efforts, it was Martin who came up with the big plays.

After Brown gave Paraclete (9-3) an early touchdown on a 4-yard run, Montclair Prep marched down the field and matched the score on an 8-yard run by Dennis.
