A NEW crackdown on train fare-dodgers has been launched following the prosecution of more than 500 ticket cheats.

The company says it has adopted a ``zero tolerance'' policy against fare dodgers and has relaunched the revenue protection policy.

Commercial director Denise Lennox said: ``Nobody likes to think that fellow passengers are travelling at their expense and it is clear from our feedback that most passengers support our ticket checks.

``Failing to buy a ticket at the first opportunity is illegal and we are delighted that we have been successful in achieving so many court convictions.''

The latest campaign features adverts showing commuters in everyday travel situations bearing the logo ``fare dodger''.

Denise Lennox said: ``This is an effective way to alert rail users that it is not simply the stereotypical gangs of youths who travel without paying.

``These crimes are being committed by travellers who look like any regular traveller. It is everyone from shoppers to commuters to people on a night out.

``Despite the impressive prosecution figures we will not be resting on our laurels. We will continue to prosecute To follow through; to commence and continue an action or judicial proceeding to its ultimate conclusion. To proceed against a defendant by charging that person with a crime and bringing him or her to trial.  fare dodgers.''
