Case History: The foundry portion of The Dexter Co., Fairfield, Iowa, is an iron shop using vertical molding machines as its primary equipment. This year, Tim Opar, vice president of manufacturing, needed a data collection system to help track inventory, costs, give scheduling more up-to-date information and, most importantly Adv. 1. most importantly - above and beyond all other consideration; "above all, you must be independent" above all, most especially , to help reduce the data entry workload of the office staff. A major concern of Dexter's was the installation, training and interface to its data collection system. B&L and Sierra Consultants resolved all of those concerns with a solid implementation plan. Wiring and radio frequency antennas were installed locally. Sierra personnel came to Dexter and checked out all of the equipment to ensure it worked properly. Opar attended a 2-day training class that included time and attendance, production, shipping, receiving and physical inventories. Prior to going live, B&L personnel visited Dexter for 1.5 days to ensure that everything was ready to go. BLIS-DC will be used in all areas of the foundry, according to Opar. "The area where the most immediate payback will occur is scheduling and payroll," he said. "We will save about 80 hr/week between the two areas. We will be able to use those 80 hr toward more profitable projects. The long-term goal is to build on this success. The elimination of data entry and the errors it creates will free up many more useable hours and increase our customer service levels." |
