BLAST WRAPS UP MYSTERY CASE; IT'S HARMLESS.

VALENCIA - A briefcase In Windows 95/98, a system folder used for synchronizing files between two computers, typically a desktop and laptop computer. Files to be worked on are placed into a Briefcase, which is then transferred to the second machine via floppy, cable or network.  left unattended outside Santa Clarita's bus yard was detonated Thursday afternoon by a bomb squad, and found to be harmless.

Employees noticed the briefcase shortly before 1 p.m. outside the gate to the parking lot of the city yard in the Valencia Industrial Center.

``Nobody knew anything about it,'' said Lt. Larry Gump of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  sheriff's station. ``It wasn't there in the morning and it was partially hidden by a bush.

``Because of all the circumstances, we decided to call the bomb squad,'' Gump added.

``The papers inside were left intact, but the briefcase was blown up,'' said Gump, adding that the briefcase was found to belong to an insurance man who had visited city employees at the bus facility earlier in the day.

``A few years ago, if someone found a briefcase, they would pick it up, bring it in the office, look inside and call the owner,'' said Gail Ortiz, spokeswoman for the city. ``Things are different now.''

The city's bus service was not affected.
