Los Angeles Deputy Fire Chief Mario Rueda said the causes of the explosions were not immediately known.

Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a number of manhole covers in the 8800 block of Sepulveda Boulevard around 2 p.m. Before they arrived, an explosion sent two manhole covers near La Tijera Boulevard flying into the air and crashing to the pavement about a dozen feet away.

Westchester resident Ralph Thomas said he detected a strong electrical smell in the air following the blast.

A half hour later, a second team of firefighters from Station 95 at International Road and Century Boulevard responded to a report of dark smoke coming from the rear of a two-story building, about 100 feet from the manholes, Rueda said.

Firefighters rolled up behind the building, parking just outside. As they entered the Water and Power Community Credit Union, an electrical vault inside exploded ex·plode
