Alejandro Garcia, 24, of Pacoima was in the rear yard of Cal-Coast Recycling about 11:15 a.m. when workers heard an explosion that they realized had injured the man.

``I looked out when I heard the explosion. I saw lots of dust and smoke,'' bookkeeper Pat Saletore told investigators from the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Fire and Sheriff's departments. ``I saw him stagger off from it.''

on his upper body, Garcia was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where he was later listed in fair condition.

While an employee told firefighters and a sheriff's deputy that Garcia was using the torch to separate a steel piece from some aluminum, investigators said they were unsure exactly what happened.

The torch itself appeared fine, while the explosion site was littered with an engine and other pieces of old machinery that appeared unlikely to set off the explosion and a small fire that subsequently erupted.

``He must have run into something while he was using the torch,'' said fire Capt. Bob Haskell.

The investigation was later turned over to the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
