Peace moves are held up by the massive gap between Unionists and Sinn Fein on the surrender of terrorist bombs and weapons.

Hardline Unionists fear leader Mr Trimble, Northern Ireland's First Minister, is about to backpedal on his insistence that the handover n. 1. The act of relinquishing property or authority etc. to another; as, the handover of occupied territory to the original posssessors; the handover of power from the military back to the civilian authorities s>.  begins on October 31.

The deadlock also means plans to set up a Belfast-Dublin body by the end of the month may have to be postponed.

Mr Blair will hold separate talks in Downing Street with Mr Trimble and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness. Downing Street said: "He'll press the decommissioning Decommissioning is a general term for a formal process to remove something from operational status. Some specific instances include:

"We hope the Nobel prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature. The awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, who left a fund to provide annual prizes in the five areas listed above.  will act as a spur to that."

Mr Trimble said he hoped the prize would help "the Republican movement take the next step" and hand in their weapons.

"I hope it's not premature in the sense that I hope the Republican movement will not let down everyone in Northern Ireland who wants to see progress."

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern predicted: "We are very close at being able to move forward on the issue."
