THE ESB (Enterprise Services Bus) A message broker that supports Web services. See message broker, messaging middleware and Web services.  has launched a probe following a blackout that left 200,000 homes and businesses without power yesterday.

It will investigate whether interconnectors between Ireland, the North and Scotland were responsible for the power failure.

The two-hour power cut began across the country just after 10am and brought some businesses to a standstill.

A spokesman said: "An immediate investigation is being launched and while it is not possible to pre-empt the results, one focus of the inquiry is on the operation of interconnectors."

The ESB has three interconnectors with the North. There is also the Moyle interconnector between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

They allow electricity to be traded between the countries and ensure greater power supply security.
