BLACKOUT IN VAN NUYS BRINGS DWP CREWS IN.
VAN NUYS - City crews worked all day Friday to restore power to a Van Nuys neighborhood where a falling tree knocked down power lines and disrupted service to 7,000 DWP customers Thursday night, officials said.
The outage in the 14200 block of Chandler Boulevard affected 40 other utility lines that serve areas of North Hollywood, Studio City and Sherman Oaks.
Work crews had restored power to most residents by midmorning and were expected to complete the job by 6 p.m. Friday, said Darlene Battle, a spokeswoman for the Department of Water and Power.
The tree crashed down on power lines about 9 p.m. Thursday, triggering a transformer explosion.
``It was like fireworks all over the place. The lights tried to come back several times and it was like things were blowing up outside,'' said Heinz Lietz, the owner of Lietz Consulting Engineers in Van Nuys.
