BLACK-TIE AFFAIR PLANNED MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION TO HOLD FIRST LOCAL FUND-RAISER.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is an organization founded in 1950 which combats muscular dystrophy and diseases of the nervous system and muscular system in general by funding research, providing medical and community services, and educating health professionals  will hold its first local fund-raiser at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Hyatt Valencia on Town Center Drive.

``He's acting as our goodwill ambassador for this inaugural event. A lot of people know him and are coming because of him,'' Schwartz said.

Colton was born with muscular dystrophy muscular dystrophy (dĭs`trōfē), any of several inherited diseases characterized by progressive wasting of the skeletal muscles. There are five main forms of the disease. , which causes gradual but irreversible muscle deterioration. He does well, his dad said, but occasionally uses a wheelchair.

Schwartz and his wife, Ann, have been active with the Muscular Dystrophy Association since Colton was diagnosed as an infant, and are helping to organize Friday's event because they want to do something locally, not just to help Colton but the hundreds of people in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  who are affected by a neuromuscular disease.

There is currently no treatment available for muscular dystrophy sufferers, and no cure for the disease.

``That's what motivates Ann and I to do this,'' Schwartz said. ``You can't just look at your son and tell him that nothing can be done. We had to do something.''
