Occidental College History The Birth of Occidental College Occidental College (commonly referred to as Oxy) was founded on April 20, 1887, by a group of Presbyterian clergy and laymen. will present the alumni dinner and play "Scenes From the Quad: Through the Eyes of Black Students," at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Alumni Auditorium, followed by a free screening of the film "Fear of a Black Hat," Friday in the auditorium. Accompanying the "America's Smithsonian" exhibit in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or will be lectures by Rex Ellis and Lonnie Bunch. Ellis' topic is "Storytelling and African Folklore," scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, and Bunch will lecture on "Black America and the California Dream" at 2 p.m. Sunday.
