BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS.

Here are some other events celebrating Black History Month:

The William Grant Still Arts Center, 2520 S. West View St., Los Angeles, is sponsoring the monthlong "Celebrate Black Los Angeles," including various free programs for the community. For more information and a schedule of programs, call (213) 734-1164.

Occidental College will present the alumni dinner and play "Scenes From the Quad: Through the Eyes of Black Students," at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Alumni Auditorium, followed by a free screening of the film "Fear of a Black Hat," Friday in the auditorium. Occidental College is located at 1600 Campus Road, Los Angeles. For more information, call (213) 239-2637.

Accompanying the "America's Smithsonian" exhibit in downtown Los Angeles will be lectures by Rex Ellis and Lonnie Bunch. Ellis' topic is "Storytelling and African Folklore," scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, and Bunch will lecture on "Black America and the California Dream" at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both lectures will take place at the William Grant Still Arts Center. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.

The African Marketplace will present free music, film and literary programs by individuals and organizations representing the African-American community at 3 p.m. Sunday at the William Grant Still Arts Center. For more information, call (213) 734-1164.

The Department of Theatre and School of the Arts at California State University, Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff St., will present a symposium on "The Documentary Performance and Its Emergence Out of Oral Tradition of the African Diaspora" at noon and 8 p.m. Friday. A daylong discussion will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The California Afro-American Museum, 600 State Drive, Exposition Park, Los Angeles, features art from many prominent African-American artists. The museum will feature "The Art of John Biggers: View From the Upper Room" through April 21. More than 127 drawings, prints, sculpture and paintings tracing the artist's work during five decades will be included. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Admission is free; parking is $5.
