BLACK & WHITE ALL OVER THE RED CARPET.

Byline: SANDRA BARRERA and NANCY DILLON Staff Writers

Happy feet crammed the red carpet Monday at the Golden Globes, with our favorite stars choosing bold looks from the penguin palette.

Goddess-y white gowns shared space with dramatic black confections, while fanciful petticoats, delicate ruffles, gold bangles and jeweled belts took center stage over blinding bling.

``Grey's Anatomy'' star Katherine Heigl sizzled in a black taffeta taffeta, cloth, originally silk but now also made of synthetic fibers, supposed to have originated in Persia. The name, derived from Persian, means "twisted woven." Taffeta is in the same class and demand as satin made of silk. The cloth is made of a plain or tabby weave, and the textures vary considerably. In addition there are two types of silk taffeta. Piece-dyed taffeta is often used in linings and is quite soft. Escada gown with a dramatic tulle Tulle (tl, Fr. tül), town (1990 pop. 18,685), capital of Corrèze dept., S central France. Firearms and other goods are made there. Tulle was built around a 7th-century monastery. It gave its name to tulle cloth, first manufactured in the town. fishtail hem and train.

Sienna sienna: see ocher. Miller shivered in her white Marchesa cowl-neck dress with gold embroidery and an even longer train.

Jennifer Lopez also wore Marchesa, looking stunning in a backless, scarf- style black gown with a rich gold border.

``My husband loved it. That's usually the deciding factor,'' she told reporters.

Newly single Cameron Diaz struck a decidedly funky note with tiers of white tulle spilling from a Victorian fitted bodice and jeweled belt with a black bow.

``Little Miss Sunshine'' star Abigail Abigail (ăb`əgāl), in the Bible.

1 The wife of Nabal. She persuaded David not to take vengeance on her husband. When Nabal died, she married David.

2 David's stepsister, mother of Amasa.
Breslin, 10, looked adorable in her pitch-perfect tulle petticoat, telling Joan Rivers it was her first experiment with high heels.

Ellen Pompeo, a Best Actress nominee for her work on ABC's ``Grey's Anatomy,'' went for a sleek, futuristic look in a Versace high-neck gown with an open back and sparkling silver trim.

``Volver'' star Penelope Penelope (pənĕl`əpē), in Greek mythology, wife of Odysseus and the mother of Telemachus. In Homer's Odyssey she is pictured as a chaste and faithful wife. When Odysseus was away, she was surrounded by suitors who tried to persuade her that he would never return. Cruz chose a deep scoop-neck Chanel Couture gown with a sweet ruffle around the neck.

Her voluptuous look caught the eye of Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, and Cruz excused herself from red carpet interviews to exchange hugs and kisses with the opera legend.

``I'm so happy for you,'' he told her. ``You were brilliant in `Volver.' But that's why you're here.''
