:BJ) today reported that sales for May 2006 increased by 8.6% to $655.5 million from $603.4 million in May 2005. On a comparable club basis, sales increased by

4.2% including a contribution from sales of gasoline gasoline or petrol, light, volatile mixture of hydrocarbons for use in the internal-combustion engine and as an organic solvent, obtained primarily by fractional distillation and "cracking" of petroleum, but also obtained from natural gas, by  of approximately 2.2%. Last year, the Company reported a comparable club sales increase of 0.5%, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of 20 basis points.

The Company provided the following additional information regarding May 2006 sales for BJ's Wholesale Club:

On a comparable club basis, sales were highest in week two and lowest in week three, reflecting a calendar shift in timing of Mother's Day versus last year. Comparable club sales were positive in all major markets with the highest increases in the Upstate New York Upstate New York is the region of New York State north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. It has a population of 7,121,911 out of New York State's total 18,976,457. Were it an independent state, it would be ranked 13th by population.  and the Mid-Atlantic regions.

Excluding sales of gasoline, the average transaction amount for the month of May rose by approximately 6% and traffic decreased by approximately 4%.

On a comparable club basis, food and general merchandise sales each increased by approximately 2%. Categories with strong comparable club sales increases compared to last year included automotive & tools, beer, electronics, major appliances A major appliance is usually defined as a large machine which accomplishes some routine housekeeping task, which includes purposes such as cooking, food preservation, or cleaning, whether in a household, institutional, commercial or industrial setting. , paper products, personal health, produce, summer seasonal and televisions.
