(BJ: NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange ) today reported that sales for August increased by 6.5% to $384 million from $361 million in August 2000. Comparable club sales rose by 3.5% for the month and have increased by 4.1% year-to-date. Jack Nugent, president and chief executive officer, said, "August sales results reflected continuing strength in fresh food and other consumables, such as health & beauty aids."

The company provided the following additional information on the factors which affected August sales: By major market, BJ's comparable club sales increases were strongest in New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt. and Metropolitan New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of . Total chain comparable club sales trends were strongest in the first week of August, primarily due to very hot weather which stimulated sales of air conditioners and summer seasonal merchandise, including outdoor furniture, coolers and grills. Other high growth categories during August included small electronics, large-screen TVs, and DVD players. In addition, BJ's fresh produce and beverage departments continued to generate excellent sales.
