MARKET LOGIC: The Dow Jones industrial average jumped within 40 points of 8,000 Tuesday as investors ushered in the quarterly profit-reporting season with an enthusiastic vote of confidence. The Dow rose 103.82 to 7,962.31, the first close above 7,900 for the famed barometer.

SAFEWAY EARNINGS RISE ON VONS PURCHASE: Safeway Inc.'s second-quarter earnings rose 26 percent, partly reflecting its $2.55 billion acquisition of the Vons Cos. grocery chain. The second-largest food and drug retailer in North America said profit from operations rose to $134.1 million, or 54 cents a share, from $106.7 million, or 44 cents, in the year-earlier period. Per-share results beat the 52-cent average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by IBES International Inc.

SPA FAUCET REPORTS REVENUE INCREASE: SPA Faucet Inc., a maker of kitchen and bathroom fixtures, reported a nearly 62 percent increase in revenues for the fiscal year ended May 31 over last year. Revenues for the year were nearly $17 million, compared with $10.5 million the prior year, according to the company. The most recent results continue an upward trend for the company, whose revenues have increased each of the past three years, according to company officials.

PACIFICARE MOVING HEADQUARTERS TO SANTA ANA: PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. said it will move its corporate offices into FHP International Inc.'s former headquarters in Santa Ana as it merges the two companies' businesses. PacifiCare acquired FHP, formerly of Woodland Hills, for $2.1 billion in February. The managed-care company said it will move about 700 employees out of its Cypress headquarters. An added 200 employees will move to former FHP offices in Costa Mesa.

AUSSIE COMPANY BUYS DISNEY FARM MAGAZINES: An Australian publishing company has acquired Farm Progress Cos., which publishes Wallaces Farmer and 28 other farm magazines, from the Walt Disney Co. Rural Press Ltd. said it paid $56.9 million in the deal. The sale is subject to U.S. regulatory approval, but Rural Press officials said they expect approval sometime this month. Farm Progress Cos. also operates seven farm shows and has marketing and database services, and reported earnings of $4.8 million in 1996 on revenues of $39 million. Farm Progress Cos. came under Disney control last year when Burbank-based Disney bought Capital Cities/ABC Inc.
