 tumbled nearly 150 points Friday and fell into negative territory for the year as the stock market resumed its downward spiral amid more worrisome inflation signs. The Dow fell 148.36 to 6,391.69, its third drop of more than 140 points in 11 sessions.

GREAT WESTERN SETS ITS ANNUAL MEETING: Chatsworth-based Great Western Financial Corp. announced Friday that it will hold its annual meeting June 13, giving shareholders a chance to vote on three directors proposed by hostile bidder H.F. Ahmanson & Co. Irwindale-based Ahmanson, the largest U.S. thrift, had sought a May 6 date after Great Western said it would postpone the meeting indefinitely. Ahmanson, which has a $6.02 billion offer on the table based on Friday's stock price, was not able to obtain a court order to compel Great Western to meet earlier. Great Western rebuffed the Ahmanson offer March 6 and accepted a bid by Seattle-based Washington Mutual “WaMu” redirects here. For the Washington, DC radio station, see WAMU.

 EXTENDS POLLUTION CREDIT PLAN: The South Coast Air Quality Management District The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), formed in 1976, is the air pollution agency responsible mainly for regulating stationary sources of air pollution for most of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside County, and all of Orange county.  expanded its pollution credit program to include makers and users of small devices such as home heaters and clothes dryers. In the past, the program encompassed vehicles and industries requiring an AQMD permit. Under the program, those with lower than mandated pollution levels can sell their pollution credits to companies that have difficulty meeting these standards. Makers and users of small devices can sell their credits, but they can't buy them for now.

SONY TO CLOSE TRIUMPH FILMS: Sony Pictures Entertainment plans to close down its low-budget Triumph Films after Triumph completes its current slate in order to focus its development and production within its core Columbia TriStar operation.The 4-year-old unit focused on movies with $8 million to $10 million budgets and its top release was ``Sidekicks,'' with $25 million in ticket sales domestically. Its upcoming releases include ``Truth or Consequences,'' ``Bliss'' and ``Masterminds.''
