WELLPOINT: WellPoint Health Networks Inc. said Wednesday that net income for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1996, was $47.0 million, or 71 cents per share Cents per share

20TH CENTURY: Citing a turnaround in its auto insurance business as a factor, 20th Century Industries on Wednesday reported higher annual earnings. The Woodland Hills-based insurance holding company, said earnings for the year ending Dec. 31, 1996, were $74.1 million, or $0.92 per share (primary), on revenues of $937.1 million. In 1995, the company reported earnings for the year of $69.6 million, or $0.88 per share, on revenues of $1.1 billion. In the fourth quarter, ended Dec. 31, 1996, the company posted a net loss of $7.8 million, or ($0.22) per share (primary), on revenues of $212.9 million. In the same period in 1995, earnings were $26.3 million, or $0.36 per share, on revenues of $261.7 million. Results for the quarter were impacted by pre-tax charges of $40 million for additional loss and loss adjustment expenses related to the 1994 Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. . The fourth quarter also was adversely affected by weather-related claims amounting to approximately $8 million.
