 its bid for rival funeral home operator Loewen Group Inc. and said it would make the offer directly to Loewen shareholders. Houston-based Service Corp. said it would offer nearly $2.72 billion in stock for the Canadian company, or just under $45 for each Loewen common share. The earlier bid was $2.5 billion. Loewen said it would respond ``in due course.''

ARCO PLANS: Atlantic Richfield Co. and two partners plan to develop an oil field west of Prudhoe Bay that will help offset declining production from Alaska's North Slope. The find is the biggest commercially viable discovery in Alaska since 1988. At 300 million barrels of proven reserves, the field is a fraction of the size of the 12 billion barrel Prudhoe Bay field. The new project - dubbed Alpine - will be operated by Arco and its minority partners, Anadarko Petroleum and Union Texas Petroleum.
