Although originally humorous, the column in many cases has supplanted the editorial for authoritative opinions on world problems. LANCASTER Some 35 of A.B. Hale Jr.'s friends helped him turn 80 April 29. They surprised him at a bash hosted by his daughter, Stephanie Hale of Bakersfield. Most of the invited guests were fellow members of The Retired Officers Association, of which he currently serves as secretary/treasurer. Some members of the Citizens Committee for the California State Veterans Home in Lancaster also attended. He is a charter member of that organization. ``A.B. deserves it,'' master of ceremonies Tom Craft, a retired Navy captain, said of the gathering. ``After all, we need to tell him these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. After 11 years he transferred once more, this time to the Edwards Air Force Flight Test Center, and retired again in May 1983. Partygoers were asked to bring only funny cards, pictures or embarrassing stories from the honoree's past to relate. See Sandress. gave some insight into Hale's character and there were myriad cards and greetings from other well-wishers, some of whom could not attend. ``I can't believe that nobody gave this away,'' said the hostess. ``When I said I wanted it to be a surprise, not one person said anything to make Dad suspect what was going on. He was really surprised.''
