BIRMINGHAM STEEL CORPORATION ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SCRAP PROCESSING FACILITY.


BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996--Birmingham Steel Corporation today announced that it is evaluating sites and plans for constructing a scrap processing facility in the lower Mississippi River

The Lower Mississippi River is the portion of the Mississippi River downstream of Cairo, Illinois. From the confluence of the Ohio River and Upper Mississippi River at Cairo, the Lower flows just under 1600

The facility will have access to the major transportation systems that will provide the most cost-effective access to the Company's existing steel plants in Jackson, Mississippi Jackson is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. State of Mississippi. It is one of the county seats of Hinds County; Raymond is the other county seat. As of the 2000 census Jackson's population was 184,256. ; Birmingham, Alabama Birmingham (pronounced [ˈbɝmɪŋˌhæm]) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Jefferson County. ; and Kankakee, Illinois; and to its steel plant under construction in Memphis, Tennessee.

Commenting on the announcement, Robert A. Garvey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "This scrap processing facility is part of our continuing strategy to reduce total raw materials costs while securing a reliable supply of scrap for our steel plants."

Details concerning the plant design, capacity, start-up date and site selection are still under review by the Company.
