BIRMINGHAM STEEL CORPORATION ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT REALIGNMENT.


BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 1996--Robert A. Garvey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Birmingham Steel Corporation, today announced the Company's new management organizational structure This article has no lead section.

. The business will be organized around five functional areas: Finance, Administration, Development and Technology, Commercial, and Plant Operations. The following five appointments have been made with responsibility for these areas:

-- John M. Casey

Executive Vice President-Finance and Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Casey's responsibilities will include finance,

accounting, tax and treasury.

-- William R. Lucas William R. Lucas (born March 1, 1922) was the fourth Director of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. He served as director from June 15, 1974 to July 3, 1986; when he was forced to resign as a result of the Challenger tragedy.  

Executive Vice President-Administration and General Counsel

Mr. Lucas will be responsible for environmental and

services, information technology, corporate organization

and governance issues, and other administrative matters.

-- Frederick J. Rocchio, Jr.

Executive Vice President-Development and Technology

Mr. Rocchio's responsibilities will include development

of the Memphis project, the DRI See Digital Research.  project and any future

projects; the development and operation of the Company's

scrap business, and the implementation of the required

technology in all of the Company's facilities.

-- Thomas N. Tyrrell

Executive Vice President-Commercial

Mr. Tyrrell will be responsible for sales and marketing,

which will be subdivided into three product groups:

construction products, merchant products and SBQ SBQ Sociedade Brasileira de Quimica (Portugese)
SBQ Special Bar Quality
 bar

and rod products. He will also be responsible for

distribution and logistics.

-- Jack R. Wheeler

Vice President-Plant Operations

Mr. Wheeler will be responsible for the ongoing operations

of all of the steel plants.

-- Investor Relations Investor relations

The process by which the corporation communicates with its investors.
 

Investor relations will be handled jointly by Tom Tyrrell and

Mr. Paul H. Ekberg will continue as Vice Chairman and act as special assistant to the Chairman until his (Ekberg's) retirement in July.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Garvey said, "This new structure will clearly define the roles within our organization and serve us well in our efforts to achieve our goals of growth and profitability. We are confident that these actions, together with measures recently undertaken by management, will contribute to the long-term success of the Company."
