Birmingham High is undefeated, taking its sixth win in its season opener with a convincing 49-20 drubbing of El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 at home.

That's the same Birmingham that won just two games last year and was shut out in the West Valley League.

``I thought we needed to be 6-0'' at this point, first-year Birmingham coach Ed Crosen said with a laugh.

That may happen going into West Valley League play. The win sets up a real test for the No. 10 Patriots next week against No. 8 Taft, considered the best team in the league. And then Birmingham marches into the heart of a difficult league season.

So, is Birmingham for real?

``They still haven't had a challenge,'' said El Camino coach Rick Hayashida, whose team fell to 2-4, 0-1 in league. ``They haven't faced the Sylmars or the Tafts.''

The Patriots rolled up 543 yards, paced by junior quarterback Scott Jensen's night. He went 11 of 18 for 324 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Kevin McCleary carried 16 times for 129 yards and three scores, and D'Andre Sewell carried 10 times for 102 yards.

Does that make them real?

``I'll tell you in seven days,'' Crosen said. ``Taft has as good talent as anybody in L.A.''

Not that the Patriots are hurting.

The Patriots used the speed of a top-ranked track team to break the game open after a see-saw first quarter left Birmingham with a 15-14 lead.

Then, the Patriots poured it on, scoring twice in the second quarter, with a 23-yard McCleary run and a 53-yard pass from Jensen to junior Ramal ramal /ra·mal/ (ra´m'l) pertaining to a ramus.

The Patriots burned the Conquistadores for three touchdowns over 50 yards.

Birmingham put the game out of reach in the fourth with sophomore Chad Green Chad Elton Green (Born: June 28, 1975 in Dunkirk, New York) is a former switch-hitting, righthanded minor league baseball player. The game was marred by a a handful of personal foul calls in the third quarter, which the coaches disputed after the game.

The Patriots were flagged 18 times for 173 yards, including flags for a late hit and a couple roughing calls.

``There's no need for that in high school football,'' Hayashida said.
