A BANK worker was jailed yesterday after he embezzled more than pounds 2million (pounds 2.9million) to buy rare cockatoos and macaws.

Lee Gardiner was sentenced to nine years after stealing from elderly or disabled Lloyds TSB customers to pay for his collection of 100 exotic birds.

The 32-year-old stole up to pounds 41,500 at a time from accounts by targeting elderly customers who he thought would be unable to spot his frauds.

He then built up the second largest rare parrot collection in Europe which included blue and gold macaws, pairs of palm cockatoos worth pounds 20,000, pesquet's parrots worth pounds 15,000 and gang -gang cockatoos worth pounds 25,000.
